We would like to inform the Users that, as of 3 August 2026, the paper identity card will no longer be valid for travel abroad, regardless of the expiry date indicated on the document.
Decree-Law No. 108 of 26 June 2026 introduced a number of important changes concerning identity documents.
A non-expired paper identity card may continue to be used as an identification document in dealings with the Italian Public Administration and with public service providers, including Consular Offices, but it will no longer be valid for travel abroad.
Italian citizens residing in the consular district are therefore invited to check their documentation in good time and, where necessary, apply for the Electronic Identity Card (CIE).
For information on how to apply for a CIE, users are invited to contact the competent Consulate or consult the website of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation:
https://www.esteri.it/it/ministero/struttura/laretediplomatica/
Dedicated appointments are available for those who do not hold any other valid identity document.
It is also recalled that, as of 1 June 2026, Italian citizens residing abroad and registered with AIRE may apply for the Electronic Identity Card at any Italian Municipality, pursuant to Law No. 11 of 19 January 2026. In this case, applicants must bring their Italian Tax Code.
For provisional identity documents that may be issued by Italian Municipalities in urgent cases, users are advised to check in advance the entry requirements of the destination country by consulting the Viaggiare Sicuri portal.
