The Embassy or Consulate of Italy responsible for receiving the request is the one in the place of residence of the citizen or in the place where the marriage was celebrated.<\/p>\n<p>To request the registration of a marriage solemnized in the Republic of South Africa through the Consulate of Italy in Cape Town, the following steps must be followed:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Obtain the original <strong>full (unabridged) marriage certificate<\/strong> from the <strong>Department of Home Affairs<\/strong> of the Republic of South Africa. Short-form marriage certificates (abridged) are not suitable for registration purposes and will therefore not be accepted.<\/li>\n<li>Once the unabridged marriage certificate has been obtained, it must be legalized with an <strong>Apostille<\/strong>. In the Republic of South Africa, the only authority competent to legalize a marriage certificate with an Apostille is the <strong>Department of International Relations and Cooperation (D.I.R.C.O.)<\/strong>. Instructions on how to obtain an Apostille on the original marriage certificate can be found at the following link: <a href=\"https:\/\/dirco.gov.za\/legalisation-services\/\">Legalisation Services &#8211; DIRCO<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Once the original unabridged marriage certificate has been apostilled, it must be <strong>translated into Italian by one of the sworn translators<\/strong> whose signatures are registered with the Consulate of Italy in Cape Town. Only the marriage certificate itself must be translated; the Apostille does not need to be translated.<\/li>\n<li>Together with the apostilled marriage certificate and its Italian translation, the following documents must be submitted to the Consular Office:\n<ul>\n<li>a copy of a <strong>valid identity document<\/strong> for both spouses;<\/li>\n<li>the <strong>registration request form<\/strong> duly completed and signed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When completing the registration request form, please note that in the section relating to the spouses\u2019 place of birth, the specific city of birth must be indicated.<\/p>\n<p>The documentation described above may be delivered in person or sent by courier to the Consulate of Italy:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>For in-person delivery<\/strong>, an appointment must be booked through the <strong>Prenot@mi portal<\/strong> by selecting the service \u201cDelivery of documents\u201d.<\/li>\n<li><strong>For courier delivery<\/strong>, the following address must be written on the back of the envelope containing the documentation:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Consulate of Italy in Cape Town<br \/>\n2 Grey\u2019s Pass, Gardens<br \/>\n8001 Cape Town<br \/>\nAttention: Civil Status Office<\/p>\n<p><strong>PLEASE NOTE:<\/strong> The original documents will remain in the personal file of the Italian citizen held in the archive of the Consulate of Italy in Cape Town and will not be returned after registration. It is therefore recommended that certified copies be obtained before submitting the original documents to the Consulate.<\/p>\n<p>Once the request for registration of the marriage has been received, together with all the required documentation, the Consular Office will promptly forward a certified digital copy to the competent Italian Municipality (Comune).<\/p>\n<p><strong>PLEASE NOTE:<\/strong> The Consular Office does not notify the applicant when the registration request has been forwarded, nor does it notify the applicant when the registration has been completed by the competent Italian Municipality.
