Italian language and culture

Italian is a language of culture. Learning it means gaining access to a literary heritage of fundamental importance to European history, to valuable humanistic and scientific texts, and to Italy’s rich theatrical, musical, operatic, cinematic, and television production.

Italian is a language of study. Every year, many students choose to attend Italian schools, universities, academies, and libraries.

Italian is a language of work. Managers, investors, technicians, skilled workers, and professionals engage with Italy’s industrial, artisanal, and service sectors.
And by speaking Italian, a visit to Italy and its warm, welcoming people becomes a true pleasure—among cities of art and natural wonders.

Promotion of Italian Language and Culture Abroad

The promotion of Italian language and culture abroad is ensured by the diplomatic, consular, and cultural network of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, by the system of Italian schools abroad, and by the local committees of the Dante Alighieri Society.
In Cape Town and the Western Cape, Italian courses are offered by:

The Italian Studies Section of the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at the University of Cape Town (UCT)
The Dante Alighieri Society of Cape Town
Westerford High School

The Italian Cultural Institute in Pretoria, which also offers both in-person and online Italian courses.
