Cultural cooperation between Italy and South Africa is based on the Agreement on Cooperation in the Fields of Arts, Culture, and Sport, signed on March 13, 2002, in Cape Town during the visit of President Ciampi, and in force since 2004.
Italian Cultural Institute
The Italian Cultural Institute in Pretoria organizes public Italian language courses and collaborates with the Embassy and the Consulates in Johannesburg and Cape Town to host cultural events and promote Italian language and culture.
Promotion of the Italian Language
In 2014, Johannesburg saw the inauguration of its first bilingual school (Crawford School), which includes Italian language courses as part of its curriculum.
At the university level, Italian language courses are offered at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, the University of Cape Town (UCT), and the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Durban.
The Dante Alighieri Committees, active in Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg, and Pietermaritzburg, offer Italian language courses and organize cultural outreach events.
