CHILDREN TRAVELLING TO AND FROM SOUTH AFRICA

TRAVEL ABROAD FOR MINORS

South Africa’s legislation regarding entry, transit and exit from South Africa of minors was revised in December 2018 and again in November 2019. Under the new provisions, children who are Italian nationals travelling with both parents would in theory only require a valid South African passport, provided both names of the parents are listed in the passport. However, it is advisable, as a precautionary measure (for example, border posts that have not yet adapted to the new legislation), to also carry a multilingual integral birth certificate (unabridged birth certificate) of the minor, issued in Italy (or, for AIRE members, from the appropriate consular structure). If there are doubts about the relationship between the parents and the children (due to different surnames, significant differences in age, different nationalities or other), it would be advisable to carry any other document confirming parental relationship

In addition, should the child travel only with one parent, or with no parents, he/she will have to have an affidavit showing the consent of the parents.
Download the affidavit form – the signature must certified by a Commissioner of Oaths or by a South African Diplomatic Mission.

An unaccompanied minor, will also have to be in possession of a statement from the person who will receive the minor at destination.

All passports need to be valid for at least 30 days after the date of return from South Africa, and there must be two completely empty pages in the visa section.
