For general information on the applicable legislation please visit the page on Registry on our Foreign Ministry website.

Italian citizens are obliged to register changes of marital status and family status (such as birth, marriage, divorce, death).

In order to register a birth, marriage or death which took place in South Africa you will need to provide the Consulate with the original unabridged certificate, which is obtainable from the local Department of Home Affairs.

The certificate has to be sent to DIRCO (Department of International Relations and Cooperation) in Pretoria for the necessary legalization of the document by means of an Apostille, which renders the certificate valid for registration purposes in Italy.

For further information please visit the Forms page on the left menu where you will find all the relevant forms, and the instructions on how to Apostille documents.
