Passports and identity cards

All appointments have to be booked via the portal Prenot@mi. Please read the following information carefully as well as the detailed instructions Prenot@mi Handbook.

PROCESS TO OBTAIN A NEW PASSPORT (the same procedure applies to renewals)

Please click below for instructions on how to apply for a passport, if the applicant is:

  1. an Italian citizen residing in this Consular jurisdiction (Western Cape, Northern Cape, Eastern Cape provinces or St Helena)
  2. a child under the age of 18 residing in in this Consular jurisdiction
  3. an Italian citizen who does not reside in this Consular jurisdiction

1. ITALIAN CITIZEN RESIDING IN THIS CONSULAR JURISDICTION

To obtain a passport, the applicant must be registered with AIRE (the register of Italians residing abroad), must have sent a registration request at least 30 days before booking the passport appointment.
If you have kept the Consulate updated with your information such as change of address, marriage etc, your are most likely already registered with AIRE.

HOW TO OBTAIN YOUR PASSPORT

    1. Create an account on the Prenot@mi portal (please follow the Prenot@mi Handbook)
    2. Book an appointment;
    3. Attend the appointment in person with the following:
      – Your expired or expiring passport, or a valid ID document if you do not have a passport yet
      – 2 passport-size photos (click here for format information)
      – Proof of EFT or cash

 2. CHILD UNDER 18 YEARS OF AN ITALIAN CITIZEN RESIDING IN THIS CONSULAR JURISDICTION

To obtain a passport, the applicant must be registered to AIRE or must have sent a registration request at least 30 days before the appointment to obtain the passport. To register to AIRE, please visit the Anagrafe-AIRE page.

If the applicant is under 18 years old, the act of consent of both parents is necessary in order to issue his/her passport.

    1. If both parents have E.U. citizenship, only one parent (Italian citizen) needs to be present at the appointment, but he/she must bring the consent form signed by the other parent, with a valid European ID and a photocopy of the birth certificates of the children with the names of both parents;
    2. If one parent does not have E.U. citizenship, the consent form must be signed in the presence of a Consular Official or an Honorary Consular Agent.

The presence of the child is necessary on the day of the appointment if:

-the child has already turned 12 years old


HOW TO OBTAIN YOUR PASSPORT

    1. Create an account on the Prenot@mi portal (please follow the Prenot@mi Handbook)
    2. Schedule an appointment
    3. Attend the appointment in person with the following:
      – Your expired or expiring passport or a valid ID in case you do not have a passport yet
      – 2 “passport format” pictures (click here for format information)
      – Proof of EFT if you don’t wish to pay cash

 3. ITALIAN CITIZEN NOT RESIDING IN THIS CONSULAR JURISDICTION

If the applicant resides outside this Consular jurisdiction or is registered to AIRE in a different Consulate or in Italy, this Consulate will proceed with the issuing of the passport when the competent authority has given the authorization to do so.

If the applicant is under 18 years old, both parents need to give their consent.

    1. If both parents have E.U. citizenship, only one parent (Italian citizen) needs to be present at the appointment, but he/she must bringwill need to present the consent form signed by the other parent, with a valid European ID and a photocopy of the birth certificates of the children with the names of both parents;
    2. If one parent does not have E.U. citizenship, the consent form must be signed in the presence of a Consular Official or an Honorary Consular Agent.

The presence of the child is necessary on the day of the appointment if:
– it’s her/his first passport
– the child is over 12 years old

HOW TO OBTAIN YOUR PASSPORT

    1. Create an account on the Prenot@mi portal (please follow the Prenot@mi Handbook)
    2. Schedule an appointment
    3. Send the Consulate (via email, fax or by hand), at least 30 days before the date of the appointment, a copy of the first 4 pages of the previous passport, an email address, a phone number and a home address to contact you

Attend the appointment in person with the following:

    1. Your expired or expiring passport or a valid ID in case you do not have a passport yet
    2. 2 “passport format” pictures (click here for format information)
    3. Proof of EFT payment if you don’t want to pay the passport in cash

If the applicant is under 18 years old

Attend the appointment in person with both parents with the following:

    1. Your expired or expiring passport or a valid ID in case you do not have a passport yet
    2. 2 “passport format” pictures (click here for format information)
    3. Proof of EFT payment if you don’t want to pay the passport in cash
    4. If both parents have E.U citizenships, a valid European ID of both parents and the consent form signed by the absent parent, with a valid European ID and a photocopy of the birth certificates of the child with the names of both parents
    5. If one parent does not have E.U. citizenship, a copy of both parent’s IDs and a photocopy of the birth certificates of the children with the names of both parents

COST OF THE PASSPORT

Since 8 July 2014 passports cost 116 Euro (the cost of the booklet is  42.50 Euro plus a once off administrative fee of 73.50 Euros). For tariffs in Rand please see the Consular Tariffs page.
From 8 July 2014 yearly revenue stamps are no longer applicable.


PAYMENT

The payment can be made in South African Rand only, in one of the following ways:
– Cash on the day of the appointment
– EFT to the Consulate to be made prior to the appointment. Proof of payment needs to be brought to the appointment (for bank details please visit the Consular Tariffs page)

The Euro-Rand exchange rate used for the payment of consular fees is declared quarterly by the Italian Embassy in Pretoria and immediately published on the website of the Consulate, where the amount due for the passport is clearly stated. Please visit the Consular Tariffs page.

PLEASE NOTE:
The rate applicable is the rate in effect at time of issue of the passport.
If your appointment date falls at the beginning of a quarter (in the first week of January, April, July or October) it is advisable to pay cash.

FINGERPRINTS

The issue of a new passport requires the physical presence of the applicant at the Consulate in order to acquire the fingerprints.
The following persons are exempt from fingerprinting:

  1. Children under the age of 12
  2. People with documented diseases or permanent physical impediments (eg. Medical certificate issued by the local health authority, hospital etc.).
  3. People with finger impairments
